Milpitas detectives report gunshots heard during vehicle burglary

MILPITAS — Gunshots were heard Thursday morning when detectives interrupted a vehicle for a burglary in Milpitas, according to police.

No injuries were reported.

The encounter happened shortly after 4 a.m., the Milpitas Police Department said in a statement. Detectives witnessed a vehicle burglary in the 1200 block of Edsel Drive and followed two suspicious vehicles, a sedan and an SUV, to the 300 block of South Park Victoria Drive.

A suspect got out of the sedan and attempted to steal a second vehicle, according to police. Detectives ordered the suspect to stop, but the suspect got into the SUV instead.

“As the SUV accelerated away, gunshots were heard,” police said.

Detectives pursued the SUV through Milpitas, Fremont and San Jose, which was involved in a traffic accident on Interstate 680 near North Congress Avenue. The suspect got out of the SUV and ran into a residential area, according to police.

Milpitas police searched the area with help from the San Jose and Fremont Police Departments and the California Highway Patrol, but did not find any suspects.

The sedan abandoned by the suspect in Milpitas was later determined to be stolen.

Police have not released any other information about the case.
