Earlier this week, a “rogue wave” hit their cruise ship during a storm, killing one passenger and injuring four.
The Viking Polaris was hit by a storm late Tuesday night en route to Ushuaia, Argentina, while passengers were on an Antarctic cruise.
The storm generated huge waves that shattered several pieces of glass on a cruise ship that fell and killed an American woman.
Viking Cruises confirmed in a statement Saturday that the ship was hit by “rogue waves” – which the US National Oceanic Service described as “twice the size of surrounding waves”.
“It is with great sadness that we can confirm that a guest has passed away following the incident,” Viking Cruises said.
It did not reveal the names or nationalities of the passengers.
However, Argentina’s state news agency Telam said the dead was an American woman who “was hit by a glass surface that collapsed during the storm”.
“Four other guests sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident and were treated by the ship’s doctors and medical staff,” Viking said.
The cruise line said it was investigating and canceled the next Viking Polaris trip scheduled for Dec. 5-17.
Viking Cruises said the ship arrived in Argentina on Wednesday and suffered “limited damage” in the incident.
NOAA described rogue waves as “very unpredictable” and said they often came unexpectedly from directions other than the prevailing winds and waves. ”
