I’ve been one of Apple’s best customers for the past decade or so. I’ve bought every new iPhone since I switched from a Blackberry to an iPhone 4S.
This year is no exception. The day after the September 17th release, I bought the silver iPhone 14 Pro Max, 256 GB. I got $640 by trading in my iPhone 13 Pro Max, but I still have to pay $780.
After playing with my new toy for a few weeks, I can confidently say there are no big surprises other than the “Dynamic Island”. That’s Apple’s fancy name for the dead zone between the selfie camera and the Face ID sensor, now used to “consolidate your notifications, alerts and activities into one interactive place.”
My colleague Antonio Villas-Boas can tell you all about the technical aspects of Apple’s latest product, so I’ll focus on how it feels to use it.
Steve Jobs’ daughter was right
Ultimately, Eve Jobs, the daughter of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, was right, posting a meme on Instagram joking that the iPhone 14 is strikingly similar to previous models.
It read: “I upgraded from iPhone 13 to iPhone 14 after Apple announced today,” while showing a man holding up a shirt identical to the one he was wearing.
While the latest series of smartphones has several new software features, I’m disappointed that it doesn’t have more.
I’ll admit I’m pretty excited about the full screen on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max — especially now that the notch is gone.
I also admit that the dynamic island feature is really cool. I love that you just press it while listening to music and it takes you back to the app. However, it could have been used more efficiently.
After owning the iPhone 13 Pro Max, aside from the Dynamic Island, I can’t see any difference that makes it really worth the upgrade. Maybe the smartphone has reached the level it will fundamentally be?
Dynamic Island uses the space at the top of the screen to display notifications, song titles, and other information.
apple
nonsense
I’m always making excuses to justify spending hundreds of dollars on a new smartphone: using my iPhone for work, logging trip reports, making sure the battery lasts all day, and it can support everything I have to do on it. Let’s call it: nonsense.
Even the now ancient iPhone 8 (from a long time ago, er, 2017) can do the job. However, having the latest phone is a charm, it’s just a way to brag to your friends.
Apple CEO Tim Cook told him that someone asked him if Apple would adopt RCS — Google’s messaging app for Android phones — so his mom could more easily see the videos he sent her, and he should Buy an iPhone for mom.
When there are also AirPods, iPads, MacBooks and Apple Watches available for purchase, Cook believes everyone should own more than just an iPhone. Yes, of course I own all these devices too.
While I keep saying I don’t think I can change from iPhone to Android, a lot of people do and somehow survive. Maybe it’s time for me to go on vacation to iOS too?
