While studying the trade, students at the Shulkier County Technology Center can also showcase their creativity.
During the STC Open House event on September 21, 2022, STC students Anthony Gaughan and Noah Morgan both participated in the Computer Information Systems program on the South Campus, demonstrating their “pizza box computer”.
Open Days provide an opportunity for prospective students, current students, parents, industry partners and tertiary partners to come together and experience all that career and technical education has to offer. The theme of this year’s event is “Career and Technical Training for the 21st Century,” to underscore the fact that today’s STC is very different from “Vo-Tech in your grandparents’ time,” said Director Shannon Brennan. Six hundred and sixty-nine visitors attended the open day.
In addition to the pizza box computer, visitors tasted food prepared by culinary students, witnessed a new PLC trainer in the electromechanical technology project, a digital anatomy table used in the emerging health project, HAAS CNC in the precision machining project, and welding procedures in plasma cutter; all items purchased through the Technology Equipment Grant Program promoted by Career and Technical Education.
Industry partners also participated in the biennial event to showcase their support for career and technical education. “They are on hand to discuss long-term career opportunities for STC graduates with parents and prospective students,” said Director Shannon Brennan. From BAC Local (Masonry Union), Auto Zone, Sands Ford, Hexcel, St. Luke’s Geisinger Hospital and Bowers Home Carpenter, to name a few.
Spring Open House is scheduled for March 1, 2023.
